StockerYale Introduces Circular Polarization Maintaining Optical Fibers for Current Sensors

January 22, 2007 -- SALEM, N.H. -- StockerYale, Inc. (NASDAQ: STKR - News), a leading independent designer and manufacturer of structured light lasers, LED modules, specialty optical fibers for industrial OEMs and other photonics-based products, today announced the launch of its new circular-polarization-maintaining fibers. These fibers have been designed for use as the sensing fibers in optical current sensors.

Optical fiber current sensor technology is gaining ground in the electrical power industry, where it is used in metering, control and protection applications. Lightweight, small-form-factor fiber sensors offer many advantages over traditional heavy iron-core current sensing equipment. Optical fiber sensors are expected to change the manner in which high-voltage electricity is managed in electric power distribution systems. Other growing applications include electrical railways and various industrial processes, such as the production of aluminum, copper and steel, in which enormous amounts of electricity are consumed.

"StockerYale is the only leading supplier of specialty optical fiber to offer circular polarization maintaining products on a commercial basis. We are poised to become the premier supplier of specialty fibers for this growing market," said Paul Jortberg, Senior Vice-President of the Specialty Fiber Business Unit.

"The development of the method for drawing and coating the circular polarized fiber posed particular technical challenges to our optical fiber R&D team. However, due to the massive investment in new utilities infrastructure underway today throughout India and China, we are confident in a significant return from this R&D initiative," said Mark Blodgett, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of StockerYale.

The Company will introduce the circular polarization fibers at the Photonics West trade show in San Jose, California, from January 23 - 25, and they be showcased at a number of other trade show exhibitions during the course of 2007.
