Miniature LED Illuminators

In designing an application-specific LED illumination solution, StockerYale draws from a wide variety of approaches in LED module design. We choose the most appropriate, reliable and cost-effective solution for a given application.

An important component in the company's "bag of tricks" is the so-called chip-on-board (COB) technology. This approach involves arranging an array of closely spaced (sub-millimeter) light-emitting dice on a substrate. Such illuminators are inherently highly compact. Figure 1 is a microscope image of one of StockerYale's COB devices, taken at a magnification of 160 X. As can be seen from the image, it is possible to bring the LED dice arbitrarily close to one another, so that very high packing densities are possible.

Thanks to the high packing densities, StockerYale is able to provide illuminators with high brightness and high uniformity, even at short working distances.

StockerYale supplies sub-centimeter LED modules which exploit the miniaturization offered by chip-on-board. Examples of applications include curing lights and other medical, dental and industrial, pen-sized tools.

Figure 1: This is a microscope image of LED dice in a chip-on-board illuminator. The LED chips are affixed directly to circuit pads on a heat-sinking substrate. The gold wires connected to electrodes on the dice are visible. Very high packing densities are possible. Figure 2: Miniature LED illuminator for a pen-sized hand-held tool.
